OUR PHILOSOPHY

Focus on K-8

These years are a special window of time in a child’s life to foster healthy attitudes toward school and learning, to establish joy in the process, to build solid foundations in core subject areas, and to give children the confidence to explore new horizons.

Concentrating on Core Subject Areas

We put an emphasis on building solid foundations in a few well chosen subjects: primarily Math and English grammar and literature, and also cultural studies and the fundamentals of music. The skills and pathways of thinking developed through years spent building conceptual understanding in these areas open up limitless opportunities for further study and success in these and other disciplines.

Valuing Process Over Product

Meaningful learning is not just about finishing a class or getting homework done, but also about guiding children toward deeper understanding and further exploration of a concept. We believe in a de-emphasis on external evaluators like grading so that the process of discovery and understanding can flow from within.

Responsive Dialogue Between Student and Teacher

We believe in facilitating one-on-one interactions as much as possible. They provide the child with a forum to not only ask questions and share ideas, but also to feel that their contributions to the dialogue matter. The respect in these exchanges gives them a sense of security, which allows them to progress along their own continuum of learning without arbitrary standards of accomplishment or an unhealthy need for affirmation.

Establishing Patterns of Focus

Central to our philosophy is the constant encouragement for children to be ‘in the moment’ with their learning and to engage with the task at hand. While it may seem that children are asking for more leeway in doing the things they want, they actually feel most comfortable and secure when boundaries are set for them. This applies to both their social behavior and their time at school. Setting up a learning environment with consistency and structure not only encourages them to focus, but ultimately opens the way for more freedom in their learning. It gives them the confidence to venture forth themselves.

Sharing Knowledge

It is very healthy when learning evolves in such a way that children are excited to share what they know with others. Presenting and sharing knowledge and/or skills in both informal and formal ways is a vital part of the learning process. It empowers children to delight in their accomplishments and nurtures their individuality through feelings of pride and mastery. They can be recognized for what they have discovered, what they know, and what they can contribute.

Integrated Approach to Childhood Learning

Establishing continuity between the many facets of a child’s life, from their life at home to their experiences at school and their extracurricular activities, gives children a sense of security. They come to feel that learning is not simply a collection of unrelated tasks, but is something that is part of them, always. In the best of worlds, it extends beyond the school day and becomes a lifelong way of being.

MUSIC LESSONS & PRACTICE SUPERVISION

It is also a wonderful avenue for connecting with others, contributing to the community, and developing confidence in presenting oneself in public.

Music Lessons

Practice Supervision

An essential part of developing as a musician is learning how to practice responsibly and effectively. We can help your child develop these good habits and prepare for their weekly lessons.

HOMEWORK SUPPORT

We will supervise and guide your child’s school homework, while encouraging a positive attitude toward homework and learning. Sometimes a child needs a little help reframing an assignment that may feel insurmountable or not well-tailored to their particular style of learning. With the right guidance, the homework assignment can be an avenue for exciting exploration.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Virtual Travel Preparation

Tell us about an upcoming family trip, and we will design a themed unit around what your child will see and experience on their trip. The unit could spotlight anything from an historical site to a painting, sculpture, special building, or unique natural environment. This will help your child connect more deeply with their travels, and take pride in sharing what they have learned with their family.

Virtual Museum Skills

This program will help your child develop an appreciation for art and observation through focused units on specific works of art. Knowing how to navigate a museum in a thoughtful way is a skill that takes time to develop and can best be achieved by studying a few works of art in advance of the visit, actively engaging with them during the visit, and following up afterwards. Each unit will be creatively designed around the child’s interests and the resources of their environment.

Classical Music Appreciation

We are committed to helping young children develop an ear for classical music. This can lay the foundation not only for further study in classical music, but also for engagement with many and varied styles of music. Because pieces in the repertoire can be long and intricate, it is important to expose children to Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary styles when they are young. Attuning children to the emotions, moods, characters, and basic structures in the music can help them make sense of the experience. We also emphasize the importance of respecting and appreciating the effort and accomplishment of musicians in the concert setting. Everyone, from young students to seasoned professionals, deserves our attention when sharing their art with us.

Our Founder

~Susan Werner~

When my husband and I moved to Bozeman, Montana in the late 80’s, I could never have imagined all the exciting twists and turns life would take. My education in geology and marine science, with degrees from Stanford and Yale, opened the way to many wide-ranging geological adventures, from the Arctic Seas to the wilds of the Northwest. But, driven by ideas about education I had quietly been developing over the years, my career took a sharp and passionate turn when I got to Bozeman. In 1996, I started the Bozeman Charter School. It was a K-12 program that embodied what I most value in education - building solid foundations, giving students personal agency in their learning, and ultimately helping them discover an optimum balance between academic discipline and creative freedom.

In 2016 I launched ProjectYouth, a platform of academic enrichment programs for children, K-8. These tutorials started as in-person sessions in New York City, and have now expanded to include an online platform that reaches students coast to coast. This summer, I am launching “Education in Focus,” an online forum for discussing new educational approaches based on my experience. I am currently writing a book about the story of the Bozeman Charter School and how its philosophy and methods can be applied to a range of educational settings.

Our Tutors

~Andrée, Mariel, Lucien & Hélène~

Andrée (26), Mariel (28), Lucien (29), and Hélène (31) have been tutors at ProjectYouth since the beginning. After attending the Bozeman Charter School, they studied math and music as undergraduates at Yale and Harvard, and as masters students at The Juilliard School and Northwestern University. Luc and Mariel are currently enrolled in PhD programs in mathematical and computer sciences, Luc at Caltech and Mariel at UC Berkeley. Andrée and Hélène reside in New York City where Andrée works as a co-founder of RYZE, a medicinal mushroom startup, and Hélène works on the editorial staff at The New Yorker magazine.
